Johannes Gutenberg’s invention of movable type was the catalyst for a revolution in the ways knowledge and information was communicated to large numbers of people. Today, the open educational resources movement promises a similar revolution, in which the distribution of knowledge is no longer limited by the material costs of paper and printing, but can now be transmitted globally and at nearly zero cost.

In the interest of reducing costs of and increasing access to educational materials, faculty members who teach with FIU Online are encouraged to explore the use of open educational resources in their courses, either as course texts or supplemental digital course content. Below are some resources to help you get started (resource descriptions come from their respective sites):

MERLOT

MERLOT is a free and open peer reviewed collection of online teaching and learning materials and faculty-developed services contributed and used by an international education community. 

OpenStax CNX

OpenStax CNX is a dynamic non-profit digital ecosystem serving millions of users per month in the delivery of educational content to improve learning outcomes. There are tens of thousands of learning objects, called pages, that are organized into thousands of textbook-style books in a host of disciplines, all easily accessible online and downloadable to almost any device, anywhere, anytime.

OpenStax College

OpenStax College is a nonprofit organization committed to improving student access to quality learning materials. Their free textbooks are developed and peer-reviewed by educators to ensure they are readable, accurate, and meet the scope and sequence requirements of your course.

OER Commons

The Institute for the Study of Knowledge Management in Education created OER Commons, publicly launched in February 2007, to support and build a knowledge base around the use and reuse of open educational resources. As a network for teaching and learning materials, the site offers engagement with resources for curriculum alignment, quality evaluation, social bookmarking, tagging, rating, and reviewing.

Open Education Consortium

The Open Education Consortium is a worldwide community of hundreds of higher education institutions and associated organizations committed to advancing open education and its impact on global education.

Khan Academy

Khan Academy is an organization on a mission. We're a not-for-profit with the goal of changing education for the better by providing a free world-class education for anyone anywhere. All of the site's resources are available to anyone.

College Open Textbooks

The College Open Textbooks Collaborative, a collection of twenty-nine educational non-profit and for-profit organizations, affiliated with more than 200 colleges, is focused on driving awareness and adoptions of open textbooks to more than 2000 community and other two-year colleges.

InTech

InTech is a pioneer and world's largest multidisciplinary open access publisher of books covering the fields of Science, Technology and Medicine.
