FIU Online LIVE seeks to advance the online student experience by developing a model where the pedagogical delivery of instruction is enhanced by state-of-the-art technology and world-class instructors.

An Online LIVE classroom is separated by space but rooted-in real-world problem solving facilitated by the content expert. Online LIVE courses are 50% online, with a 50% synchronous meeting pattern once per week.

An Online LIVE course promotes interactive learning opportunities and allows for personalized interactions with the instructor. Each synchronous session is designed as an authentic learning experience while the foundational knowledge is delivered asynchronously in preparation for the synchronous authentic learning experiences.

Online LIVE class meetings are designed to review the material covered throughout the course in an in-depth manner. Students will have the opportunity to apply what they’ve learned to different scenarios and discover the taught concepts in greater detail. Depending on the discipline, these synchronous sessions could include the following:

  • Working together to solve problems as a class
  • Engaging in group activities and projects
  • Participating in in-depth discussions revolving around the taught concept
  • Debate, virtual courtroom exercises
  • Case study presentations

Online LIVE Course Developer Certification Program

This 9-week training is designed to support faculty in the design, development, and delivery of a High-Quality Certified Online LIVE course, enabled by state-of-the-art technology and synchronous virtual classroom meetings.

The training is comprised of asynchronous deliverables and synchronous meetings. During the asynchronous sessions, participants will review materials and develop course elements in the following areas:

  • High-Quality Course Objectives
  • EdTech Tools Assignment Development and Implementation
  • Asynchronous and Synchronous Course Map Development

The synchronous sessions consist of four 75-minute zoom sessions over the course of 9 weeks. Attending all four sessions is required for certification.  During the synchronous sessions, participants will discuss the topics such as,

  • The Online LIVE Framework
  • Creating a Virtual Learning Environment
  • Time Management
  • Online LIVE Support

As the Online LIVE course format represents a significant and intentional instructional strategy, all instructors requesting to teach Online LIVE must have their department’s course approval and complete the certification program. Online LIVE training and instructional design support for Online LIVE sections are aligned with and targeted for submission of the course for High Quality or Quality Matters certification. Courses that have not yet been certified under either the High Quality or Quality Matters initiatives will be prioritized for program selection.

Completion of the Online LIVE certification is not associated directly with an incentive stipend. Faculty developing or significantly redesigning an online course may qualify for new course development or quality certification stipends, however any course development or quality certification incentives are provided in accordance with the academic department’s schedule and procedures.

Online LIVE FAQs

  • What is the difference between a regular online class and an Online LIVE class?

FIU Fully Online courses are Asynchronous classes taught through Canvas. While there is no expectation or requirement for student attendance at synchronous meetings, activities and assignments are designed to take place virtually and include due dates.

FIU Online LIVE classes are blended online classes taught through Canvas and Zoom with regularly scheduled online class meetings via Zoom. Activities and assignments are designed to take place virtually and include due dates.

  • How should departments determine which classes should be Online LIVE?

An Online LIVE course may be scheduled where it is assigned to a certified instructor, and when the blend of asynchronous activities and synchronous meeting time supports and advances the students’ learning experience.

Courses should not be scheduled in this format when the synchronous meeting pattern requirement may create a scheduling barrier to students enrolled in fully online programs, or when the instructional strategy of the course does not align with the required meeting pattern or recitation style synchronous experience intended for the Online LIVE course format.
