FIU Online Continuing and Professional Education offers three no-cost, self-guided programs to the public.

Whether you want to prepare for the coming hurricane season, better manage that project you’ve been meaning to take on, or just develop a better understanding of how to keep the peace while confined at home, new no-cost programs offered through FIU Online have got you covered.

FIU Online Continuing and Professional Education created open community courses to help develop and sharpen personal and professional capabilities necessary for the here and now. From hurricane preparedness, to project or conflict management, the programs are designed to be self-directed, available to everyone at no cost, and can be completed on your own time.

Project Management Essentials

In today's globalized and fast-paced workplace, project management is no longer just a career choice; it's an essential skill. Now you can complete a course fully online to gain a solid foundation in project management. This course provides learners with key concepts and techniques for successfully managing projects from planning to completion.

Designed in three modules, the course teaches learners to differentiate between projects and operations; identify the different phases of a project; develop strategies to effectively handle projects; assess if project management is a career path for you; and share your project management experiences with others.

Emergency Preparedness

With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and hurricane season about to start, now is the time to become prepared for remote possibilities and worst-case scenarios. The Emergency Preparedness course offers learners new skills and knowledge on hurricane preparation and response efforts that can be applied to most dangerous weather events.

Within the digital course, learners can view information on what to do before, during and after dangerous weather events. It also describes the potential dangers for those in the South Florida community, so they can be storm-ready.

Peacekeeping Your Home: A Conflict How-To

During times of unexpected confinement, such as with the coronavirus pandemic, conflict with those confined with us may be inevitable. Raquel Perez, a senior instructor at FIU's College of Communication, Architecture and the Arts, and a conflict resolution consultant with more than a decade of professional experience in leadership, leads this three-module course.

The course demonstrates how to apply the wisdom of conflict management, self-awareness, self-care, and self-advocacy to maintain a peaceful home. While the course can be completed individually, it is also recommended for groups, to encourage a cooperative environment and stimulate meaningful dialogue. Learners will be able to identify and understand conflict styles; differentiate between conflict management and resolution; learn de-escalation strategies; and develop objectives to address conflict. development and organizational design.
