FIU's online Master of Science in Engineering Management offers a fast-track to engineering leadership by developing managers who understand both the engineering and business aspects of technology. With FIU's fully online program, you can advance your engineering career with our flexible program that combines technical, law, and business courses.

Graduates of this program will learn the broad knowledge and skills required to successfully manage and lead today's organizations. The customized, state-of-the-art applied management curriculum includes courses in Total Quality Management (TQM), engineering project management and business law taught by distinguished faculty experts.

The Systems Engineering track includes courses on the design and analysis of operational solutions in the fields of manufacturing, assembly, supply chain, logistics and transportation. The TQM course provides students with the body of knowledge required for the Six Sigma Black Belt certification. Students are also well prepared for certifications as a Project Management Professional.

    Program Curriculum

    The Master of Science in Engineering Management online program consists of three semesters. Students enroll in 4 courses (12 credits) each semester.  During the Fall and Spring, students will enroll in four 16-week courses. During the Summer, students will enroll in two 12-week courses.  A total of 30 credit hours, including three components: the Engineering Management Core Courses (nine semester hours), Business Electives (nine semester hours) and Systems Engineering Track (12 semester hours). Up to six semester hours of graduate credit may be transferred into the master’s program.

    Plan of Study

    Fall (16 weeks):

    EIN 6357 Advanced Engineering Economy                                     

    Review of engineering economy and the evaluation of advanced manufacturing systems. Evaluation of alternative capital investments considering income taxes, depreciation, inflation, risk and uncertainty. 

    ESI 6455 Advanced Engineering Project Management 

    This course covers entire phases of project management including selection, planning, budgeting, scheduling, monitoring, and control. It focuses on the management of engineering projects through case studies and independent research assignment.   

    ESI 6316 Application of OR in Manufacturing                               

    Overview of OR techniques. Manufacturing system and product selection. Shop loading, resource allocation, production scheduling, job sequencing, and plant layout problems. System performance evaluation.

    EIN 5346  Logistics Engineering

    Algorithms and principles to integrate heterogeneous tools. Principles of XML, ASP, and other tools. Development of programming projects.

    Spring (16 weeks):    

    MAN 6167 Leadership in a Global Environment

    The course is designed to provide the student with a clear understanding of current thinking in the area of leadership. It focuses on the holistic nature of leadership and the impact leaders have on individuals, groups, and organizations.

    EIN 5359 Industrial Financial Decision

    The use of financial techniques and data in planning, controlling and coordinating industrial activities. This course will familiarize the student with accounting concepts and analytical methods.

    EIN 5226 Total Quality Management

    Fundamentals of TQM and its historical development. Integration of QC and management tools, QFD, benchmarking, experimental design for scientific management.

    EIN 5332 Quality Engineering

    This course examines quality control from an engineering standpoint. It covers ways to meet the challenge of designing high-quality products and processes at low cost.

    Summer (12 weeks):

    LAW 5072 Business Law for Engineers and Entrepreneurs        

    Focuses on the formation, governance, operation and legal protection of businesses. Coverage includes contracts, malpractice, products liability, employment law and intellectual property law.        

    MAR 6805 Marketing Management

    Analysis and application of theory and problem solving for marketing management in the global environment. Emphasis will be on the role of marketing in the organization; planning the marketing effort; management of the marketing organization; control of marketing operations and evaluation of the marketing contribution.

    Applicants for admission into the Master of Science in Engineering Management online program must meet the following University Graduate School admission criteria:;

    Admissions Requirements

    • A bachelor’s degree in STEM (science, technology, engineering, math), business or a closely related field from a regionally accredited institution with a minimum of “B” average in upper-level undergraduate work, or a graduate degree from an accredited institution.

    • Undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher for the last 60 hours of upper division coursework. The applicant whose GPA does not meet the minimum GPA requirement may be considered for conditional admission.

    • Good standing with all previously-attended colleges and universities. 

    Transfer of Credit

    Students may receive permission to transfer up to a maximum of six semester credits provided that: (1) the courses were taken at the graduate level at an accredited college or university; (2) with a grade of ‘B’ or better; (3) the courses were judged relevant by the program director; (4) the credits were not used toward another degree; and (5) the credits will be no older than six years at the time of graduation. No more than 12 semester hours taken at FIU as a non-degree seeking student may be counted toward the Engineering Management graduate program.;

    International Students
    • Proof of English Language Proficiency. If you earned a bachelor degree in a country whose official language is not English, you must demonstrate English language proficiency by earning a passing score on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). TOEFL required minimum score: 550 (paper-based exam) or 80 (internet-based). IELTS required minimum score: 6.5. When requesting official scores, please refer to FIU Institution code 5206. TOEFL / IELTS scores are valid for two years. View list of TOEFL/IELTS-exempt countries.

    • Official Transcripts Translation. If official transcripts are not in English, a second copy of the transcript must be requested for translation by an official translation agency. Both the official translation, as well as the original transcripts, must be submitted to FIU.

    • Certified Copy of Diploma. If you obtained your degree at a foreign institution.

    Admissions Documents

    The following must be submitted:

    • Online master's programs application. Be sure to select Master of Science in Engineering Management.

    • Official transcripts from all previously attended universities. A copy of the diploma is needed if the degree is not posted on the transcript. 

    • A resume including education, training, and employment history, practical and research experience (such as projects and publications), skills and other pertinent information.

    • A statement of purpose describing your professional goals and reasons for pursuing this degree at FIU.

    • Three letters of recommendation must be sent. Letters are to be from those who have knowledge of the applicant's prior professional experience (e.g. a supervisor) or of the applicant's ability to perform graduate work (e.g., a professor) and should attest to the applicant's intellectual ability, motivation, maturity, and potential. 

    Meeting the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee admission into the program. Official transcripts/translations must be submitted directly by the respective institution(s) in electronic format or mailed in a sealed institution envelope to:

    The total cost of the online Engineering Management program is $25,000 for Florida residents and non-Florida residents. Students pay for courses at the beginning of each semester. All fees are subject to change.

  • Top Faculty

    Dr. Chin-Sheng Chen

    Dr. Chin-Sheng Chen joined the faculty of FIU in 1989. He received a Ph.D. from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Industrial and Systems Engineering. His research and scholarly work is primarily in the areas of CAD/CAM systems integration, manufacturing automation, enterprise systems modeling, analysis and design, engineering project management, and manufacturing sustainability. Dr. Chen is a charter member of the Engineering Management Honor Society and serves on the editorial board for the International Journal of Industrial and Systems Engineering. 

    Dr. Shih-Ming Lee

    Dr. Shih-Ming (Ted) Lee joined the faculty of FIU in 1986. He received his Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering from Iowa State University. He served as a chairperson of the Industrial and Systems Engineering Department at FIU for 18 years and joined the Engineering Management program in 2012 as a professor of practice. His expertise is in the area of engineering economics, engineering financial analysis, inventory management, and quality engineering. 

    Dr. Karen Schmahl 

    Dr. Schmahl joined the faculty of FIU in 2013. She received her BS from Texas A&M University and Ph.D. from University of Cincinnati in Industrial Engineering. Before coming to FIU, she worked in the industry for more than 20 years, served on the faculty of Miami University (Ohio), and was a professional consultant for more than 30 years. Her expertise is in the area of total quality management, engineering economics, and industrial safety/OSHA.

    Jesus Sanchelima

    Professor Sanchelima received both his BS in Electrical Engineering and J.D. degrees from University of Florida. He joined the Law School faculty and has been teaching LAW 5072 for the Engineering Management program as an adjunct professor since 2010. His expertise is in the areas of trademark, patent, intellectual property, and general business practice. Professor Sanchelima has been practicing law in Miami for over 30 years.
