Fully online students in any major can join and graduate through the FIU Honors College, a prestigious accomplishment that employers and grad schools respect.
Honors students gain practical skills in critical and interdisciplinary problem-solving, communication, rational analysis and cultural fluency. Honors courses are designed to be intriguing and problem-based, and are not more difficult or more harshly graded than other courses. All classes are cutting-edge and interdisciplinary, and taught by experienced and dedicated instructors. Courses last two semesters, with the same professor in fall and in spring, or throughout Summer C. Students have online access to faculty, personal advising, assistance from the Honors College Career Services Center, and co-curricular activities via distance learning technology.
Curriculum
To graduate through the Honors College students must complete 12 credits of Honors coursework through any combination of the following:
Seminars: IDH 3034/3035 (6 credits, fall and spring or Summer C) These fully online courses provide a variety of interdisciplinary learning experiences, including (for example) “Instinct and Decision-making,” “International Human Rights,” “The Seven Deadly Sins,” “The Art of Persuasion,” “Myth and Ritual in Film,” and “Globalization, Inequality, and Violence.”
Study Abroad: IDH 4007/ 4008 (6 credits, spring and summer, or fall and winter break). These include, for example, trips to Cambodia and Vietnam, France, Italy, Spain, Costa Rica, and South Africa. For a full list of programs, visit http://honors.fiu.edu/studyabroad/.
Thesis: IDH 4905 (6 credits) Through ARCH (Advanced Research and Creativity in Honors), you will be paired with a faculty researcher in your area of interest who will mentor you online in a substantive research project. These credits can also be earned by producing a thesis in the major or a capstone project. Online students may participate digitally in the ARCH Conference.
