ESOL instructor, German Silva knew he wanted to go back to school to earn his master’s in Curriculum and Instruction: Curriculum Development track because it was the next, natural step for his career. Teaching for more than 20 years, Silva found the help he needed through the resources available at FIU. Specifically, he feels confident heading back to the classroom with new skills and abilities to understand the “why” of his curriculum design and is equipped to do the research to create even better outcomes for all of his students.

Excited about his graduation, Silva shares his thoughts on what his program was like and is looking ahead with great optimism about the opportunities he will now have, degree in hand.

What is your degree area of study and when did or do you graduate?

My degree is M.S. in Curriculum and Instruction: Curriculum Development track, August 2022.

Where do you work now? What do you do?

I currently teach ESOL at a local community college. I have been teaching there for over 20 years, but like I said before it’s never too late to learn. I’m so elated to have completed this online program.

What has been your favorite class and why?

That’s very hard for me to say as each course was very valuable to me. The most memorable ones were EDE 6205 and EDG 6920. From Professor Salmon’s PlayPosits to Professor Foerch’s Action Research, we embarked on this wonderful journey together and I will always be grateful to all our professors.

What immediately applicable skills have you learned?

The most important skill above all is research. FIU’s library resources are top notch. Indeed, this facilitated our learning experience at the college including the Writing Lab at the FIU Library. They were instrumental in assisting all the students with the research.

How does your degree help you in your work or how do you see it helping you in the future?

I’m a life-long learner, so it helps me to look at things from a more focused perspective. For example, I will now look at things more critically and question why things are the way they are. In addition, I believe that I can influence others including teachers and students alike to strive to become better and make a difference in the world or at least the community we live in.

Why did you decide to study this area and choose this program?

I had previously enrolled as a non-degree seeking student and took courses that complimented my work. As such, I employed what I learned from my FIU classes to the classroom. It was only a natural step for me to follow as a graduate student in Curriculum and Instruction.

What is one thing you learned that was impactful?

The biggest surprise to me is the human component. The professors, the students, and the staff from FIU have been phenomenal. Besides it all, I have made new friends and a new extended family. It’s something that I will always cherish.

Would you recommend this program to other students?

Oh my gosh, yes! I would recommend this program in a heartbeat. Don’t think about it, just do it. Thanks, FIU, for the opportunity of a lifetime! I loved each moment and I’m looking forward to the future with a big smile on my face!
