The Graduate Certificate in Teacher Leadership will help prepare experienced teachers validate their positions as teacher leaders at their school site.  Graduates of this certificate will emerge with the knowledge and skills to be teachers who extend their sphere of influence beyond the classroom and into school wide leadership activities.

Teacher leadership is a growing specialization within the field of PK-12 education.  Providing PK-12 teachers with a credential that asserts their preparation in the specialization of teacher leadership is valuable.  The Graduate Certificate in Teacher Leadership will complement the knowledge teachers have of faculty expectations and employment options in the discipline, with knowledge of the educational theories and skills of the field.  A positive relationship between teacher leaders and school administrators is one of those diverse settings that can enhance the school climate and improve student performance.

The Graduate Certificate in Teaching Leadership will promote high quality teacher leaders within diverse populations that will result in high quality learning experiences for their students.


The certificate program requires a minimum of 15 graduate credits comprised of 5 required courses.

Five Required Courses (15 credits)

  • EDA 6192 - Leadership in Education
  • EDA 6195 - Communication in Educational Leadership
  • EDA 6503 - Instructional Leadership
  • EDA 6928 - Special Topics: School Improvement
  • EDA 6943 - Administrative Leadership


Admission Requirements

  • A Baccalaureate degree from an accredited university with a GPA of 3.0 in the last 60 credit hours of upper-division coursework.
  • Work-experience in the PK-12 education
  • Educator Certificate
  • Two (2) letters of recommendation
  • Personal statement
  • Resume

Note: The GRE is not a requirement for admission into the Certificate in Teacher Leadership.
