Why Apply?

In modern society, the ability of various sectors to understand one another’s perspectives, to learn methods to reduce potential conflicts, and to develop mechanisms to work toward building consensus is extremely critical. The issues that may be explored in this area of study are multidisciplinary and lend themselves to a broad-ranging interdisciplinary certificate which will allow students both to gain an understanding of the major concepts and issues in the field.

Conflict (open or hidden) in organizations has a high cost. Professional conflict increases turnover and decreases productivity, creating an overall unhealthy work environment. Personal conflict also has long term consequences that impact conflicted parties’ well-being, especially children. Understanding the nature of conflict enables individuals to effectively manage their personal and professional lives and challenges.

Upon completion of the program, participants will be able to:

  • Deal with difficult people and situations
  • Express anger responsibly
  • Use positive language to work with strong emotions
  • Assess your conflict styles and behavioral patterns
  • Manage work teams through confrontation into cooperation
  • Identify the role of culture in conflict to effectively engage in cross-cultural interactions
  • Understand and use the stages of forgiveness and reconciliation
